Who Counts as ‘None’?

People in South Asia who neither believe god(s) nor engage religious practices nevertheless often self-identify as Muslims or Hindus rather than—or addition to—identifying atheists. The situational and contextual dynamics generating such positionings have implications for the conceptualization of nonreligion secular lives. Based on ethnographic research India Bangladesh focusing two individuals, we attend to embodied more ambivalent modes nonreligiosity. This enables us understand situated social beyond what is typically captured with term ‘religion’. Studying also where it not visible articulated conviction identity only contributes accounting diversity nonreligious configurations but offers significant complementary insights.
